Discussed the power issues with someone yesterday…he advised me to take a better look at the power supply. I checked the unit again this morning..and again 3.7/4.0v max…The issue has not been resolved!
Measured continuity on the power cable. It’s ok, 230v, so no problem with that cable. Time to take a better look at the power supply of the Compucase.
Check the input and output of the regulator…out 4.9v , which is pretty ok. Only four components on the PCB…I guess that big capacitor could be causing problems! Need to replace that one to start with.

Original plan was to hook up with Dion to go to the HCC Commodore meeting. Due to some miscommunication and planning, i couldn’t join him, and we plan for another meeting.
But..he was selling his book, to me 🙂 For 40 euro. And he had a boxed mouse…and we traded it with some unboxed Commodore mouse I had (1351, and another one). He actually uses the mouse 🙂

Just stole the picture of the 1351 from internet. Bought for 50 euro the mouse and a boxed, new, replacement power supply for the VIC20/C64. Just fun to have. Should have bought them when I was at Marvin’s place in Harlingen last week, from his Retro Supermarket 🙂

Bought these today, will be shipped by a dutch seller. He bought a larger retro collection some time ago, with a lot of Commodore stuff as well. Which is not his cup of tea. 75 euro, shipping included.

I go myself a Compucase 64d…symptoms..black screen and test cartridge showed ram issues and a failing PLA. Bummer. Powermonitor showed no current, and 5volt line far outside the tolerance…3.6volt is a bit low I guess.
Opened the case today, fairly easy and simple. Removed the motherboard, connected it to known working power unit (with powersaver) and fired it up..with the test cartridge. Everything working fine!, removed the test cartridge, and my beloved C64 start screen showing no issues at all. Both 5volt and 9volt within tolerance (thanks to the powermonitor from bluebolt12, look for him on ebay.com.au).
So….at least that means that there was no power failure at all, at least not with fried RAM and PLA as result!
Removed both 1541’s, one has a speedloader build in and a parallel cable. Will test both units tomorrow.
Then I connected the main board with powersaver back to the power unit of the Compucase….same problem again!. I removed the power cable of the unit…reconnect it again…and I got at least the Commodore screen again. With less ram…and slowly all kinds of characters appearing at random on the screen. Time to replace that cable…and voila…a working Compucase! Looks like something was wrong with that (longer) power cable, losing so much on the 5v line that the main board was failing. Seems like solved. Will do a longer test tomorrow.

Went to harlingen yesterday to meet with Marvin. Nice guy, nice conversation about collecting childhood dreams. Impressive storage and workplace he’s got there with loads of retrocomputing stuff. Picked up my Compucase 64d and bought a powercartridge boxed (later edition).
Car loaded..needed to get some stuff for Patrick as well, monitor, c64 with speedloader, empty disk boxes, cartridges and a VIC1020.
SONY DSC
Turned on the Compucase 64d…black screen. #@)(#)@($ Test cartridge showed failed RAM and at least the PLA. So….probably the powersupply fried the board. Investigate later this weekend….

Seller asked my to place my bid online….next day the keyboard had status reserved…contacted the seller, told me he made a mistake in reply, and sold it to somebody else which also wanted the three monitors he was selling. Grrrrrrrrr

Well..after a good 10 minutes of thinking i decided that there was still room in my study. So i just bought a CompuCase 64d. Well, that is just an awful expensive Commodore 64 and one or two VC-1541 drives in an after market casing.
Was offered on Facebook, and I just bought it from Marvin. Did some investigation…and in 2012 one was sold on Amibay for 100 euro, in 2015 one was sold for 280 euro on Ebay. And one on Ebay italy in 2017 for 100 euro. So was that 195euro well spend?? We’ll never know, but I got me one 🙂

In Italy produced in 1985 by Siel and in Germany by Wersi. Just bought me one, together with a boxed datasette from Lenz. Paid 60 euro including postage. Nice to have, otherwise it is too quit with no parcels arriving this week. Can’t have that. Nop
