Nice find: very late model Breadbox / Aldi lookalike

10/03/2018

Picked up a set last week in Musselkanaal, a two hour drive but worth it. One of the two Commodore was broken, someone managed to get two fuses in the fusebox, one of the fuses had the glas broken. At least the VIC is gone, expect the PLA as well. And again, mind you, this seller was selling these Commodores as tested and good…

BUT….the other unit, although slightly yellowed is the breadbox casing with the white keyboard. Working and still sealed. If you look into the cartridge port you can see the keyboard connector (instead of the keyboard connector on the right of the userport). This means it is a C64 with a newer short board inside, which you find usually in the C64c. Story as far as my research of other online sources went:

When Commodore developed the short board, the first release was for the breadbox with white keys, branded by the 64’er “the Aldi”. These units where produced in the states, probably because the board was developed there, and this was the initial release. These “C64 Aldi” where sold in Germany only and the board was a 250469 rev.3. After the Aldi, they started producing in Germany as well, but these lookalikes of the Aldi were produced in West Germany (WGA) and had a later revision of the 250469 board.

This one is added to the collection as well! Still two more to find, the original Aldi and the last C64c, with embossed logo and clips only!

The yellowing is a drawback, but as long as this one is working, i’ll keep it sealed and the Retr0brighting has to wait, or I might just find a nicer one later on, who knows.

Commodore 64c Test Pilot Collection

14-03-2018

The collection is complete, 3 tapes with the 5 games. The Commodore itself ,manuals and boxed joystick are in a mint condition. Very nice set after all those years!

Seller told met that he got some additional offers of 125 and 150 euro for this set, but he kept the agreement with me!

10-03-2018

Just came on auction today, a very nice looking Test Pilot version with a very clean Commodore 64c. Although 2 of the 5 original game tapes are missing, i decided to call the seller and made the deal. Will pick it up Monday evening in Maarssen. It’s probably not that difficult to get those two tapes, the Test Pilot collection is not quit rare, but to find one in a reasonable mint condition nowadays, you’ll need some luck. Paid 100 euro.

Another C64 and 1541 boxed – part 2

02/03/2018

Followup post on: Another c64 and 1541 boxed

Went to see Ruben in Arnhem, he was selling it on Marktplaats, I was interest because he said it was a really nice looking set, boxed and complete. Just offered something topping the current highest bidder (over 85 euro). It better be good… Agreed with him that I could test, so I went there with a monitor, power saver, test cartridge, spare power supply and some disks with games. I was prepared 🙂

He was working in his studio, young guy, found the boxed set while cleaning the house of his grandmother, and took it with him, to sell. In his studio he was building loud speakers and repairing light mixers…and was looking forward to have some beers tonight of the money he would be making.

Bad luck and I guess no beers.

Bad PLA. Bad SID. I couldn’t test the 1541 at all. Decided to leave it there..I’ve got enough repairs waiting at the moment.  Both boxes were not in excellent shape. Hopefully he will honest…and sell it as broken….!

SFX Sound Expander & Set

27/02/2018

This one was still open for auction. Highest offer was 150, seller asked 200. I send him an e-mail a few weeks back to ask if he was willing to sell the Commodore Sound Expander separately, with no success.  Seems that the colored C64 used to be a 64G, needs some Retr0brighting I guess, a nice project.

He was still asking 175 euro for the set, and I agreed. A bit expensive, but a cleaned 64G will do at least 75 euro, the other C64 25 euro, the boxed 1541 will do 25-30, the Arcade Suzo boxed joystick 15. Leaving me with the software, books and the Sound Expander for 30 euro 🙂

Only thing is…he is living in Musselkanaal. And that’s a two hour drive from my work..and back. Will pick up next Friday!

Pickups

27/02/2018

Went to Wilco in Maassluis last friday. That’s an one hour trip from work…usually. Maassluis is near Rotterdam, and just that friday one of the tunnels under the river Maas was malfunctioning. The whole region was one big traffic jam, and it took me a whopping 3.5 hrs to get there. Seems that the “fastest” way to get over the issue with the Maas, was getting to the small ferry at Maassluis. Right..that’s what most people thought, resulting in massive traffic jams around Maassluis, nearly every road leading to the small town was stuck, i mean literally, no progression at all.  Wilco was selling his own C64, sold the one from his father and his brother before, this one was the last one to go!

Went there to pick up a C64 set, some tapes, datasette, boxed final cartridge and a Simons’ Basic extension set. The boxed FC made it worth it! Just for 50 euro’s, and the C64 is working.

After that i drove up to Roosendaal, south of Holland, for meeting with Marc. He is one of the regulars on Marktplaats doing repairs. Took my silver KU board with me, he will try to fix the broken trace, leaking capacitors and test the board! Hopefully he can bring it back to live. In return I had a bunch of new capacitors with me (fitting the VIC housing), a REX IC-tester, 3 failing 1541’s and 2 C64C and a C64. The number of items that needed fixing was growing, and I simply don’t have the time at the moment! Last but not least I had the upper part of an old silver C64 with intact labels. He was looking for original  labels for his silver with rainbow labels.  Left my power supply of the Compucase 64d with him for fixing as well, probably a capacitor issue, as a result of which the supply wouldn’t give the C64 more than 4.0v. Hopefully he can fix that one too!

Nice guy, been there for over an hour, chatting about repairs and collecting (and shared some gossip about some of the regulars on Marktplaats). Definitely good in repairs and loved the structured approach, photographing every repair project he takes up!

Was back home at 23:00hr. Pfff…
